Reading

At The Raleigh we provide a wide range of books for children to read.  Whilst they are in the early stages of learning to read we use a range of reading schemes which are banded into colour bands in line with their difficulty.  We recognise the importance of creating lifelong readers and so with this in mind we also use non- reading scheme books which the children choose on alternate days.  These ‘real’ books are also banded by difficulty and offer children the opportunity to share high quality fiction and non-fiction with their parents as part of the reading process.

The following phonic and reading schemes are used at The Raleigh :-
Oxford Reading Tree
Rigby
PM Library
Alpha Kids
Collins
Pearsons
Ginn

Spelling

We use the Letters and Sounds Programme to teach phonics into which we incorporate Jolly Phonics actions and songs. We have introduced the Read Write Inc Spelling scheme from Years 2 to 6.
