Year 1
Welcome to Year 1
During Year 1, the children will enjoy a range of texts in English which are brought to life through drama, grammar and writing sessions. The children will become more skilled in all aspects of Maths and will develop their understanding of numbers to 100 as well as their knowledge of shape, space and measure. In Science our topics are: ‘Animals Including Humans’, ‘Materials’ and ‘Plants’.
In History, we study ‘The History of Our School’, ‘The History of Toys’ and ‘The Seaside’. In Geography we study: ‘The Countries of the UK’, Human and Physical Features’ and ‘Routes and Maps’. In Year 1, we use a range of digital resources to teach the children how to code such using the Beebots. In addition, the children will gain experience of using a range of programmes such as: Microsoft Word and PowerPoint as well as Google Safe Search to further develop and enhance their computing skills.
Workshops and trips help to bring all of this learning to life. Year 1 children at The Raleigh participate in a wonderful animal workshop where they get up close and personal with a range of wild and wonderful creatures! They visit Milestones Museum in Basingstoke to learn all about the history of toys and participate in our themed Seaside Wow Day.
One of the highlight’s of the year is our Christmas Production where they perfom alongside Year 2! In addition, the children will all perform a class assembly for you to enjoy.
We are incredibly proud of the range of opportunties available in Year 1 at The Raleigh School and are incredibly appreciative of your support in helping the children transition from the Early Years Foundation Stage to the first year of the National Curriculum.
Please do not hesitate to contact your child's class teacher with any queries throughout the year.
